Martin Mochizuki has over 35 years of experience working in the production of premium wine grapes utilizing integrated pest management and sustainable farming techniques. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in Pest Management, he began his career researching sustainable methods for pest control in vineyards. After receiving a graduate degree in Viticulture from CSU Fresno, he started working for a viticulture consulting firm in Napa Valley. Later, as a co-owner of Walsh Vineyards Management in Napa Valley he farmed 3000 acres and supervised the viticulture department responsible for integrated pest management monitoring programs, deficit irrigation scheduling, fertilizer recommendations, and viticulture research projects.
Martin was an integral part of the European Grapevine Moth Eradication Project in Napa as the Grower Liaison, and received an accommodation from USDA for his work on the project. More recently he worked as the consulting project manager for Constellation Brands and was responsible for the planting of over 10,000 acres of vineyards throughout the state of California. He now oversees vineyard operations in California and Oregon.
Martin has been a board member with various organizations such as: the American Society of Enology and Viticulture, and the Napa County Farm Bureau. He has been a program director for the Unified Wine Grape Symposium, and on the research review board for the American Vineyard Foundation. He is presently an advisor to the GWSS/PD Task Force.
Shelly Mochizuki has over 35 years experience working as a vineyard consultant. She started her career at the age of 22 in the Sebastopol apple industry and transitioned into wine grapes as the apple industry started to decline. She was one of an inaugural group to represent women working as consultants in the field, even bringing her son, Carter, now the Viticulturist for V. Sattui Winery, along with her where she taught him to identify mite damage and other pests by the time he was six years old.
Early in her career Shelly worked for a large local vineyard consulting company monitoring and advising growers and wineries on viticultural practices on some 3,000 acres of vineyard in Napa, Sonoma, and Lake Counties. She later moved on to work with Walsh Vineyards Management doing similar work on nearly 1500 acres before starting Mochizuki and Associates, Inc.
Shelly represented Sonoma County as the European Grapevine Moth Grower Liaison/ Outreach Coordinator. Her participation as a team member in this international cooperative program led to the eradication of a pest that threatened the 4 billion dollar grape crop and endangered the export market in the U.S. Her participation was acknowledged with an award from the United States Department of Agriculture.
As a consultant she has advised growers and wineries on viticultural practices at: Sterling Vineyards, Iron Horse Vineyard, Clos Pegase, Cuvaison, Beaulieu Vineyards, Dutton, Murphy-Goode Vineyards, Redwood Empire , Mauritson, Kendall-Jackson, Silver Oak and many other operations. She currently inspects and samples grapevines at nurseries throughout California as part of the Grapevine Quality Assurance program. Shelly has been a member of various organizations such as the Napa and Sonoma Vineyard Technical groups, and has a B.S. in Agriculture from California State University, Chico.
